Our itinerary starts on the provincial highway that links Capoliveri to Portoferraio, at the junction for “Le Picchiaie”. A little road starts from here which we follow until we cross an asphalted road entering the woods once again, following the signs for Mount Orello. We tackle a hairpin bend to the left and continue as far as Ranch Antonio, where we find a map of the paths. A series of detours awaits us: at the first we keep to the left and at the second we go straight on to arrive at the departure point of a circuit that we will follow around the peak. We start the ring arriving at a junction: we can climb up the hill to admire the Fortress of Volterraio in the distance, built on the southern ridge of the island, in front of us, then we descend the hill arriving at a little house. At the junction we continue down hill and then proceed, without detours, through the pines. We arrive at a plateau where we keep to the left and across the fire break coming out into an area that overlooks the sea. We continue along this section arriving above the Valle del Molino, in sight of Mount Petriciaio, that can be reached along a path which we ignore. At this point we climb along the fire break line reaching a small peak and from here we climb onto the peak of Monte Orella, in front of us: small forts dating back to the second world war are to be found on both peaks. We descend west for a few meters, meeting on the right a path that comes out near the Fattoria Monte Orello, at the beginning of the circuit. From here we can return to our point of departure.
