This interesting route passes through the splendid scenery of the Monterufoli-Caselli Nature Reserve with its beautiful surroundings and links with local traditions. Until the middle of the last century the lignite mines at Villetta di Monterufoli were still working in this area that is very rich in minerals. With its woods, vineyards and old farms it is an ideal place for fine treks.

Note:
Departure and arrival place: the holiday farm of Villetta di
Monterufoli, at km14 in a southerly direction on sp18 that links
Casino di Terra to Monteverdi Marittimo, near a CPT bus stop.
Looking at the holiday farm, a road starts on our right climbing towards the Villetta hill.
We follow the dirt track upwards and arrive at a votive “madonna” near
a junction. We go on for another ten minutes and arrive at
Villetta di Monterufoli, opposite a little church. Our path takes us
between the two buildings and we go straight on into the wood. Here we
find some bends with views of the surrounding hills and vineyards that
border the path until we arrive at a detour that we take for Podere
Nuovo; don’t be taken in by the name because it is a ruin. We carry on
along the new road until after about ten minutes we reach a green gate,
a detour which on the left climbs steeply into the wood (it is well
sign-posted). We go on through the Marocco wood and soon arrive at the
top of the hill. Once at the top, the path takes us up and down as we
walk along the southern slope of the hill and admire the
slope we climbed up. We pass a green gate and finally arrive at a wide
path which we take, going left. At a wide bend to the right, at the
second, and not the first junction, we leave the little road and start
walking down near a bend where there are hunting regulation signs. A
short distance on we pass the third green gate after which we arrive at
another path, continuing to descend. We go on towards the valley floor,
passing a little concrete shed and we continue walking through the
wood, keeping to the left at the next junction. At this point, we
briefly follow the direction of the power lines and when we pass them,
we arrive at a little hill with a pylon on top. We don’t have to go up
the hill because, at the bottom of the promontory, we find a path that
turns south, going around the hill and entering the woods once more. At
the end of the descent there is on old farm , the Podere dei Sorbi. In
front of the building there is a large olive grove which we cross going
south as far as the edge of the wood where we find a path that enters
the overgrowth and leads us to a junction that we take, climbing up. We
cross the Rivivo torrent, passing alongside a small pond and some
bee-hives until we reach a section that runs parallel to the Morocco
torrent. After this we soon see the vineyards and the holiday farm we
departed from and we arrive there after joining the path we took on the
way up.
