The leaning tower marks the way towards Piazza dei Miracoli, a unique tourist attraction shared by our “slow journey” and popular tourism; we willingly leave the crowds behind us to plunge into the austere silence of the Basilica di San Piero a Grado. We finally reach the sea at Tirrenia and are forced to suffer the busy traffic of the roads of the Livorno suburbs, repaid by a lovely walk along the pebbles of Venezia Nuova or spectacular Terrazza Mascagni. The end of our itinerary gives us a taste of the delightful things we can expect during the days to come: the Pisa hills, with all their gentleness and boundless beauty. We will cross them for the first time during the fifth leg of our journey which will give us an unsuspected and unforgettable view over Volterra even for those that have already visited it, and think, perhaps, that they know it. And just when we think we have understood this area, we will again be amazed by the sixth leg, which will take us towards the disturbing and beautiful sights of the Valle del Diavolo (Devil’s Valley).
Leaving the tourist office of San Giuliano behind us, we turn right, then left, right again and finally left (Km 1.2) in the direction of Pisa. After entering Pisa we travel along the walls towards the right until we enter Piazza dei Miracoli from Porta Santa Maria (Km 8.1). From the square we take Via Roma, crossing the Arno over Ponte Solferino; we follow Via Porta a Mare, turning right into Via Conte Fazio, crossing La Vettola and arrive at the Basilica di San Piero a Grado (Km 15.6) where we take the asphalted road behind the church. We follow this, turning left onto the promenade crossing Tirrenia and Calambrone and then we enter Livorno (Leghorn). Here we cross the town first of all following the signs for the centre and, after skirting Terrazza Mascagni (Km 37.2), when we reach the bar "La baracchina" we turn left ( Km 39.6). At the end of the road we turn right into Via Mondolfi and after we reach the railway we make a U turn, turning right towards Gabbro. We climb up towards Gabbro and once we reach the village (Km 53.7) we turn right towards Castelnuovo M., which we pass turning left towards Rosignano M.mo.. At the next junction we go straight on towards Rosignano M.mo., where the leg ends on the panoramic terrace at the beginning of the village.
