An itinerary in an environment of medium-high mountains in which even during the Summer you can enjoy the shade of pines. This path leads to Mount Orello and was part of a series of routes that linked the bunkers in the peaks used during the second world war and from which there is a 360° view of this part of the island.

Regione Toscana, Provincia di Livorno, Portoferraio, Frazione Picchiaie
Along the provincial highway that links Capoliveri to Portoferraio we
come to a turn-off in earth that starts climbing, near the sign to the
Trattoria marked on the map. Here we find some signs, one of which is
for Le Picchiaie. This was the road that connected the eastern part of
Elba to Campo, arriving along the via del Colle Reciso.
We go on climbing until we reach an asphalt road that we cross,
entering the woods again with signs for monte Orello. At the next
turn-off we go around a hairpin bend on the left and keep going in this
direction until we arrive near Ranch Antonio, where we find a large
path map. We discover that our route is now no. 64 and we go on up
until we meet another series of turn-offs. At the first we turn left
and at the second we go straight on beyond the sign for a private house
and arrive, following signpost 64, at the departure and arrival point
of a small circuit that we take around the summit of Mount Orello.
Almost immediately after the beginning of the circle, we arrive at a
turn-off: there is a hill we can climb to admire the steep eastern
ridge of the island with the fortress of Volterraio in the middle. We
descend from this hill and reach a green shed and at the next turn-off
we head down. We continue walking down and without taking any turn-offs
we go straight through some pine trees. These trees, that shelter us
from the sun, are part of a recent reforestation project and we get a
better idea of it, as well as observing the even distance that
separates them, if we continue to approach the small forts located on
the peak. We arrive on a plateau where there are three routes and
the fire-break that follows the ridge; we descend along the left path
and soon find the fire-break again at our side. We continue on the
left, crossing the fire-break line and come out in an open area on the
slope that looks out above Lacona and onto the sea, in a south
direction, with Mount Capanne well-recognisable, in the background.
We tackle this beautiful part on the side of the mountain, arriving
above the Valle del Molino and in sight of Mount Petriciao,
before which a path starts on the left that we ignore. From here we
arrive at a point where we found the three turn-offs and the
fire-break: we begin a steep climb walking along the fire-break that
brings us up onto a peak where we find a bunker. It may look as if it
isn’t built in an ideal position, but we must imagine it without the
surrounding pines. There is a second fort on Mount Orello, that awaits
us in front and not very far away, and both were in the view of a third
one on Mount Tambone, between Lacona and Camp. So, we climb up the
summit awaiting us from where we have a beautiful view of Portoferraio
and climb down in a westerly direction for just a few meters, meeting a
path on the right that brings us out near Monte Orello farm. We passed
this turn-off on the beginning of the circuit. So, we can either
retrace our steps or turn left and take the road that leads to the
Colle Reciso road, after passing a spring.
This
itinerary is part of a collection that the magazine “Trekking”,
together with the APT (Provincial Tourist Authority) of the Tuscan
Coast, has dedicated to the most beautiful trekking routes in this
area. A series of itineraries that will help you discover lovely places
and will introduce you to a district that has great environmental and
cultural appeal.
