This itinerary is interesting mainly because of nature; in the area around the convent of Monte Muro we can admire several species of exotic trees planted at the beginning of the last century: the Atlantic Cedar, the Black Corsican Pine and the Douglas Pine, that have grown in a surprising way, thanks to the favourable climatic conditions.

Località di partenza:
Regione Toscana, Provincia di Grosseto, Castiglione Della Pescaia
Following the provincial highway between Follonica and Castiglione
della Pescaia we arrive at Puntone, where there is also a bus stop. We
turn left after the bridge and go straight on for about 1.8 km. before
turning right at the junction for the Convent of Monte
Muro. We go straight on as far as Fosso al Leccione, where we park the
car at a barrier.
At the barrier we take path no. 24 that passes through the wood. The
path is used as a hunting route for the Scarlino archers and along the
way targets, messages and coats-of-arms plunge us into a medieval
atmosphere.
The path climbs gently through the wood, following the river that we
cross frequently. After about 30 minutes we arrive at two consecutive
junctions where we turn left first and then right along path 24. In
this section of the path the dominating vegetation consists of
holm-oaks, Turkey oaks, cork tress and beautiful laurel bushes that are
more than 15 meters high. The path gets steeper as we walk through the
wood until we arrive at the top of the hill where the path turns left
near a rest area at Fonte Bona. The wood clears giving us a beautiful
view of the Gulf of Follonica. We go straight on along path 24 until we
arrive at the ruins of the Convent of Monte Muro, almost completely
overgrown by vegetation. After the convent we take the road marked by
signpost 23 that descends gradually to the valley. At the next
junction we take the road marked with signpost 25 and descend down a
good dirt road, enjoying the beautiful views of the gulf and plain of
Follonica, returning to our departure point.

appeal.
