An easy route that is full of attractions. From the first part that is in contact with the sea and splendid beaches we continue through cool holm-oak woods to explore the Enfola promontory, which thanks to its position, offers us wonderful views and an environment that is exemplary for its great variety of Mediterranean scrub.

Note:
How to get to Scaglieri: from Portoferraio follow the SP 24 for 6 km in
the direction of Procchio and Marciana until you reach a turn-off going
down on the right
A path starts from the beautiful beach of Scaglieri climbing gently
through houses, in a north-west direction. Keeping to the left, we
leave the village and take a dirt track that runs alongside the sea.
First of all we climb up to a small plateau in front of the hamlet of
Forno which we quickly reach. We go down among the houses and, after
the sign for the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, we pass an
iron barrier and keep on the main path that climbs with houses on the
left. We walk around the promontory of Punta Penisola, at the end
of which, after passing a gate, we find the signs for path 50 on the
right and we take it.
From here we enter the woods, arriving at a turn-off with some signs;
we continue in a northerly direction, descending gently among numerous
holm-oaks. Walking in the shade we reach the Gulf of Viticcio and from
here the main square, climbing up from the beach. We have to walk along
a section of the Enfola highway in order to reach the base of the
promontory with the same name. Near the building where they used to
make tuna-fishing nets until 1958, a path starts climbing up the hill,
leading to the area where a part of the Brassard operation took place,
the theatre of conflicts with the French troops during the second world
war. Continuing the climb, we find barracks and just after this a
magnificent belvedere with a bench; beyond the isthmus of Enfola
beneath us we can see Sansone point with Cape Bianco behind it and the
Gulf of Portoferraio that leads to Capo Vita point, the northernmost
end of the island. From here we walk around in a circle towards the
left, around the promontory. We pass a gunpowder factory, that is quite
safe to visit, and just after passing a second ammunitions depot, a
small path takes us, on the left, as far as the spectacular Capo
d’Enfola, high above the sea; when we reach the end of the promontory
we turn back as far as the junction. From here we walk down through the
lush, very rich Mediterranean vegetation that we find in all its
extraordinary variety. Once back on the square near the
tuna-fishing nets factory, we take the same road as before as far as
Viticcio and from here retrace our steps as far as the turn-off in the
woods, where we find some path signs. Instead of going back the same
way as we came, we suggest an alternative route: we turn left as we go
down, following route 49, until just before the beginning of the
village of Forno, at the iron barrier we met before. Now we continue
along the same itinerary until we reach Scaglieri.
This
itinerary is part of a collection that the magazine “Trekking”,
together with the APT (Provincial Tourist Authority) of the Tuscan
Coast, has dedicated to the most beautiful trekking routes in this
area. A series of itineraries that will help you discover lovely places
and will introduce you to a district that has great environmental and
cultural appeal.
