Municipality of Massarosa – Naturalmente Massarosa – Guide for trekking routes
Descrizione:
From the faunistic oasis (LIPU) of Massaciuccoli we climb up towards the trees, taking a path on the right and following signpost 2, passing near an archaeological site: probably the remains of the storerooms of an ancient Roman villa. We cross the asphalted road keeping to the right and follow an attractive path that climbs up the side of the hill in the shade of centuries-old olive trees. After walking for about 10 minutes we reach the ruins of Villa dei Venulei, part of whose structure can be recognised easily. From the terrace opposite the church square we can enjoy a wonderful view over Lake Massaciuccoli, most of Versilia and the plain that stretches to the south as far as Pisa, where we can see the tower, the cathedral and the Baptistery. We skirt the parish church and turn right, along a road that takes us to the ruins of Villa Minutoli Tergimi, a mansion built on the ruins of an ancient watch tower. The villa was the centre of the great Massa (a village with a villa at its centre), belonging to the nobleman Cuccolo. The name Massaciuccoli derives from this. At this point we can return along the same path as we took on our way up or, if we are fitter, we can continue for another hour along the second part of the path that takes us towards Compignano.
